Nature Series Artist Statement

For as long as I can remember I have been captivated by birds. As a child growing up in Cape Cod I used to sit and watch them on the shores edge. My sketch books were filled with endless quick study sketches. My intrigue on this subject has continued into adult hood and my fascination with nature has been revisited through this series of paintings.

In this body of work, I have tried to recapture my early childhood interest of birds. The essence of each composition and its environment is the interpretation of what I observe. My method of working consists of multiple photographic references and quick study sketches from my hikes. The creation of these painted organic forms free my imagination and helps to provide a vehicle to a completed work of art.

Painting in general takes me to a higher level of consciousness. There is nothing like sitting on a rock by a river or in a grass covered field watching birds in their natural habitat. All of my moments spent creating in nature have allowed me to connect to the essence of pure beauty. It is through this act of letting go I have discovered a reservoir of inspiration.
